About the Transfer
Phantom of the Paradise is presented in its original aspect ratio of 1.66:1. On standard 4:3 televisions, the image will appear letterboxed. On standard and widescreen televisions, black bars may also be visible on the left and the right to maintain the proper screen format. Director Brian DePalma supervised this new high-definition digital transfer, which was made by scanning the 35mm original camera negative on a Spirit Datacine in 2K resolution, and color corrected on a Specter Virtual Datacine with Pandora color correction. Thousands of instances of dirt, debris, and scratches were removed using the MTI Digital Restoration System. To maintain optimal image quality through the compression process, the picture on this dual-layer DVD-9 was encoded at the highest-possible bit rate for the quantity of material included. The sound was remastered from the original 35mm magnetic multi-tracks. Telecine colorist: Chris Ryan/Nice Shoes, NYC; 5.1 surround remix: Ted Hall/Pacific Ocean Post, L.A., under the supervision of Stanley Goldstein; Telecine, audio, and 35mm restoration supervisor: Maria Palazzola.
