Western
Hour of the Gun
Wild Rovers (FSM)
A bit of action in both, and a lot of characterization / mood.
Bandolero!-- je l'ajoute en précisant qu'Intrada en sort une version complète, limitée, en Septembre.
"Nice little scores"
A Patch of Blue
The Flim-Flam Man / A Girl Named Sooner
A bit of comedy in Flim-Flam, some light cues throught all three, but mostly "quiet" scores, focusing on the characters
Action / Adventure
First Blood: melancholy theme, with an action reprise, suspense
Rambo II: exciting action throughout
Rambo III! action & a very nice theme
The three different approaches are very interesting; for pure action, you will want Rambo II
Total Recall: great action
The Thirteen Warrior
The Mummy
Horror
The Omen (Varèse's DE of all three scores)-- again, very different scores
Poltergeist
"Classic Goldsmith Scores"
The Sand Pebbles
Papillon
Chinatown
Patton
The Blue Max--
Lionheart-- sadly quite overlooked because the movies cited above are much more famous; Lionheart has everything Goldsmith: a noble theme, action, nice gentle themes, ...
Legend-- The GCG compilation features the last track; you'll see how lovely the love theme is, and how great it all is
"More Intellectual"
Tke kind of score that require attention
Star Trek, The Motion Picture: beautiful main theme (a splendid 5-minute flyoever of "The Enterprise"), and great "atmospheric" action, with a masterful sue of electronics and the blaster beam
Planet of the Apes
Thrillers
Basic Instinct-- Prometheus ahs just released an expanded edition; a most sultry theme, exquisite mood & suspense ("Pillow Talk" is incredibly sexy)
Hollow Man
The Vanishing-- problem: it's only available on the Fox Set; might not this one be released individually? I lvoe it; it has the same kind of synthetic texture as Basic Instinct (sort of a "breathing rhythm") and HollowMan (only, much better than the latter)
Joe Dante
Gremlins (unfortunately, only about 15 minutes of score on the album; I hope it wille ventually get the special treatment it highly deserves).
Gremlins 3-- a more comedic take, just as brilliant
Matinee-- very very nice score, quite underrated as well
Small Soldiers
Looney Tunes-- if only for the splediferous Western theme, which gets its best treatment in "Car Trouble" and shows how incredibly inventive and full of energy Goldsmith still is, despite the trendy "same old stuff" criticism
All of his animated feature scores
Both of them, that is
The Secret of NIMH-- lovely theme, quite varied, very very nice
Mulan
Little Gems
Under Fire-- a wonderful score; a lovely, lively, light score with a slight South American flavor
Medicine Man-- nice themes (especially in the noble & sumptuous "The Trees"), light music overall
Night Crossing
Twilight Zone, The Movie-- a bit of everything, with a very very nice score for "Kick the Can"
Yet a few more-- some favorites of mine
(thus a bit less objective)
Powder-- a very beautiful theme, which gets two great treatments in teh first & last tracks
The Great Train Robbery-- hints have been regularly been give that a SE edition is to be released by Varèse
Extreme Prejudice-- cool '80s rhythms; great on a hot day
