"Dressed once again in a buckskin costume and a Stetson, Duke read several scenes, and although he made the usual beginner's mistakes of overdramatizing, Walsh was again satisfied. Still Sheehan hesitated, until Walsh told him: "You'll never get anyone better. He's the best we got. He's the only one we got."
Sheenan agreed and turned to business matters. Duke Morrisson, he proclaimed, was a bad name; it did not sound american enough. They kicked a few names back and forth but none satisfied Sheehan. Walsh, a Revolutionnary War bluff, finally suggested Anthony Wayne. No good. Walsh later told Zolotow that Sheenan believed Anthony Wayne sounded "too italian", and Tony Wayne "like a girl's name". Someone suggested John Wayne. "Fine." Sheenan alone passed judgment. Without even being a party to the meeting, Duke Morrisson had become John Wayne."
