Extraits choisis :
Spoiler (cliquez pour afficher)
But, and it's a big "but" that Pacino's character would most definitely have something to say about, then we come to the WCG and HDR and find that, once again, there's something off here. The colours look mostly ok, oddly not quite looking as steel blue as the 2017 Blu-ray but still with a push towards that cooler blue that the director favours, and there are a few slightly nicer looking emergency lights, flashing red in the night, but the damn picture is ridiculously dark. Darker than in 2017, darker than on the earlier Blu-ray release, and darker than it was theatrically. Now sometimes this isn't a huge issue. You can try and pretend, for example, that all the bright daylight sequences are just sunset scenes instead, and that real-life police stations and emergency operating theatres would be somehow - inexplicably - half-lit, but when things actually get dark, that's when it gets really bad.

Now Diane Venora looks like she's a cat burglar when Pacino gets home late for dinner, Kilmer's Corvette is barely visible at all, and the faces of characters are frequently half-bathed in darkness. It's unpleasant. Yes, if you haven't seen this for a few years, you might give it a pass, perhaps misremembering it as 'always quite a dark movie' but fans very familiar with the classic, and how it should look, will probably be quite shocked really, and may be very tempted to just give this a wide berth. For a movie that's not devoid of bright daylight sequences, there is absolutely nothing bright in it, the sky is just perpetually dull, and the picture with it.

There are some things you could do to compensate - force switching off HDR ameliorates some of the issue (certainly nowhere near all of it) and leaves you with an image that is visibly more detailed and refined than the 4K-remastered 2017 Blu-ray, but without HDR some of the colours don't always look quite right, which may be intermittently distracting (though hardly fatal). All of this possibly leaves many clutching onto their old Blu-ray, and wondering whether this masterpiece will be served right by someone else in the future, or whether we have to be "grateful" that Disney even deigned to release it at all.

[...]

Disney's decision to release Heat on 4K should be seen as a positive step, and arguably encouraged given their immense access to Fox catalogue titles which they otherwise only make accessible through their streaming platform. But damn, if the last 2017 4K-mastered Blu-ray release wasn't the 'definitive edition' then this certainly isn't it either, and it's been a long time coming, landing with fabulously rich 4K detail - better than ever before - but an HDR grade that just doesn't cut it in terms of how frustratingly dark the image is. Between that, and the exact same audio and extras as the 2017 Blu-ray release, unless you want to pick up this 4K, force SDR, and pay purely for the admittedly excellent added detail (and, even then, face the fact it'll be darker than you've been used to), this is going to be a very cautionary release for many. And, given the film is a masterpiece, that's just a damn tragedy.
